Yes, We Have No Bananas...

Yesterday, in my mission to save food from dumpsters everywhere, I liberated 50 lbs of "too old" bananas from Smart & Final. After seeing a shopping cart full near the check out I asked a few questions. The nice check out girl told me they were being sold at 50 % off. Anything left would just be thrown away. Needless to say I returned at the end of the day and made the manager an offer. I was able to buy the whole lot of them for $8.88.

What am I going to do with 50lbs of bananas you ask?
Well there is the obvious baking to be done and smoothies of course.

bananas ready to pop in the freezer

I will freeze a lot of them.

and many will find their way to my little black pig!
How I love her so!

Wow, how cool is that that you have a pig! Well done you for getting all those bananas. When I was living in England there was this debate going on about people waiting outside supermarkets to collect whatever they throw out. They were called freegans and it was a rapid growing movement. So much so that the supermarkets started locking their dumpsters and posting threatening messages. It's appalling how much good food they throw away. An insult! Well done again!

Thank you! We have the same issues here in the states. Lots of waste from both restaurants and markets. If an employee were to actually give you anything it is ground for dismissal. So sad....so many resources wasted.
